Low testosterone

Does a low sex drive always mean low testosterone?

No. Low desire can come from stress, sleep, mood, relationship strain, medications or other health conditions, and low testosterone is only one possibility. An evaluation with repeat morning labs helps sort out the cause.

Testosterone does play a role in sexual desire, and reduced libido is one of the more specific symptoms of testosterone deficiency. But many men with lower desire have normal testosterone.

That is why guidelines recommend confirming low testosterone with more than one early-morning blood test alongside symptoms, rather than treating a symptom on its own.

Risks and limitations

  • Treating desire changes with testosterone when levels are normal is not recommended and can delay finding the actual cause.
