Gastrointestinal symptoms—including nausea, constipation, diarrhea, bloating, and acid reflux—are the most common adverse effects of GLP-1 receptor agonist therapies, stemming largely from delayed gastric emptying.
The standard clinical approach to minimizing these effects involves starting at a very low dose and escalating gradually over several weeks or months based on individual tolerance.
Patients are advised to eat smaller, more frequent meals, stop eating immediately when feeling satisfied, prioritize lean protein, reduce greasy or high-fat foods, and maintain consistent hydration throughout the day.
Risks and limitations
- Severe, persistent abdominal pain radiating to the back requires immediate evaluation to rule out rare conditions such as acute pancreatitis.
- Dose adjustments should only be made in consultation with your supervising physician.
